Way Too Much Effort For An April Fools Joke

Hello yes do you by any chance happen to be. a giant NERD that obsesses over sans' weird god damn clones???

This ghost has content warnings! The ghost is written as a child character and references child abuse quite frequently, both in discussion of his home life and also the fact that he happens to have a very filled out negative route. Proceed with caution!

Why Does This Exist?

In October 2019, there was a vote hosted by Excel for which shell should be added next to the Multiverse Sans ghost. One of the options was Dreamtale Sans (in reference to Dream), and Quonit found this so funny they decided to make a ghost making fun of this for April fools. There was no ill intent though and both parties found the joke funny.

What Is The Joke I Don't Get It

This is completely fair and I do not fault you for it, and I apologize for forcing you to ask this question.

Dreamtale is an Undertale AU that has nothing to do with Undertale and nothing in the story is alike in the slightest. Every character has their own completely original backstory and there are no Undertale characters in it. Instead the backstory is that there is a magic tree and that the guardian of the tree died and created two energy balls that are her kids, and these two are called Dream and Nightmare and are given skeleton bodies to posses. There is no in-universe reason why these bodies happen to look like sans. Just simply a coincidence. Later Nightmare ended up getting possessed by some magic apples from the said tree and the original Nightmare died.

This means there are technically three "Sanses" in Dreamtale. Dream, Nightmare, and Original Nightmare who is dead. When people say Dreamtale Sans, they generally mean Dream and don't know that Nightmare/dead Nightmare are from the same universe. The goal with the ghost was to have fans go "Oh, a ghost of Dream?" And then when they open it it's dead Nightmare. The other reaction was supposed to be from hyper fans like myself who were supposed to go "Uhg, why would somebody who knows nothing about Dreamtale make this ghost. They know that Dreamtale Sans can mean anybody, right?" And then they open it and laugh because they realize that was the joke.

Unfortunately the ghost's main audience ended up being people that had no knowledge of the original Dreamtale, instead just finding what pieces of the story I presented interesting. So while the original intent behind the ghost's creation has been to be funny, it's slowly transitioning to becoming more serious than it was before.

Okay, cool, but what is a ghost?

A ghost (otherwise known as an Ukagaka 伺か or Nanika 何か) is a character (or set of characters) that sit on your desktop and keep you company. They may have other functions or plug-ins that let them do other things, but their primary purpose is to keep you amused by chatting with them.

Zarla also made a video explaining them a bit more in depth if you want more information on them.

Install Instructions

You can either follow my video tutorial, or you can read these written instructions (copy pasted from Zarla's websites).

  1. The first thing you'll want to do is download and install SSP. While the site is in Japanese, just look for the "complete install package" download on the left. Download it somewhere and install it.
  2. When that's done, run SSP.exe, the program with the little bell icon. A catgirl named Emily should pop up and start talking to you in Japanese, and end up throwing up a big menu. For now, ignore all of that, and just close the menu when it appears. You can also hold down a key to speed through her text. She's the default Ghost that comes with SSP, if you're curious.
  3. Right-click the catgirl. It should bring up a long menu. If it's in English, then you have nothing to worry about. If it's not, go to the fourth option from the bottom, set it to English, then close the catgirl and reopen her. The right click menu should switch to English. The catgirl ghost will still be in Japanese though.
  4. Download the z_undertale.zip, which is the balloon the ghost will be using. You want to do this first so he'll use the right balloon when he first appears.
  5. Drag and drop the z_undertale.zip onto the catgirl's face. It should look like she's installing something. She might tell you the balloon's name when she's done. If you right-click her and go to the Balloon tab, you should hopefully see the Undertale balloon listed.
  6. Download the .nar file. This is the actual Ghost.
  7. Drag and drop the dreamtale_sans.nar file onto the catgirl. She should again look like she's installing something. She'll probably say DTS' name when she's done.
  8. Right-click Emily and go to the "Change Ghost" tab. You should now see Dreamtale Sans listed! Switch over to him and you should be ready to go. If he's not using his balloon, you can use the Balloon tab to switch him to it.

Help! My version won't update!

Many old versions of Dreamtale Sans have an outdated update url, meaning that they aren't looking at the right website to update. Thankfully, this is easy to fix.

  1. Close the ghost.
  2. Go to wherever to installed SSP, then navigate to \ghost\dreamtale_sans\ghost\master
  3. Find the file inside of the master folder titled string.dic
  4. On the eighth line, replace the URL that you have with "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/quonit/Dreamtale_Sans/master/Dreamtale_Sans/"
  5. Press Ctrl + S to save
  6. Reopen Dreamtale Sans
  7. Press Ctrl + U to update

If this doesn't work, there might be something wrong on my end. Feel free to contact me though either Tumblr or Discord (Quonit#9934).
