Tala is Gold's cousin. Shortly after Gold's Mom became pregnant with him, she decided to move to New Bark Town where her sister, who was also expecting a baby, was living. The two kids saw each other almost every day, as they were neighbors and even when they were little kids it was easy to walk to each other's houses.
They also lived near Professor Elm, who would tell them all about Pokemon, consequently sparking their interest at a young age. Once the two were old enough, he offered them starter Pokemon. Tala picked up Chikorita, and named it Kunzite.
Unlike Gold, Tala wasn't very interested in becoming a great Trainer. Instead, she wanted a garden. Grass Type Pokemon had always been her favorite, since at home she helped take care of a garden with her Mom. She of course still picked up gym badges, as she loved being out traveling on her own, but her interest was always more in raising her Pokemon.
