Important Note: Red used to be known as a girl named Dawn, and for most of this summary I will be refering to him by that name and with she/her pronouns, because is relavent to understanding his backstory.

Early Life
Dawn lived in the small town of Pallet in Kanto with her Mom and Dad. Her Dad would often travel for work, so it was usually just her and her Mom.
The neighbors were friendly with each other and would often host get-togethers at their houses so their children could socialize. One such neighbor's kid Dawn was often with was Blue. As young kids they were friends... Kind of. They would read together and play kid games and act like pals but when they disagreed (which happened most of the time) they would fight. It would never get to the point of genuine bullying, but there was a lot of "I'm smarter" type disagreements, then them trying to prove it.
As they got older they both developed an interest in Pokemon. They were voratious readers, getting any information they could find on the topic just so they could know something the other one didn't, then brag about it later.
When they disagreed, Blue would always counter, saying "Well my Grandpa is a scientist so that means I'm right". This made Dawn very frustrated. It felt like she could never win an argument with him.
Trainering
Professor Oak one day approached them with the idea of giving them each a starter pokemon, so they could become trainers and explore the world to help him do research on raising Pokemon.
